THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Hey national media! Let the Cam Newton thing go! Are you even paying attention?

Cam Newton was always a problem for defenses in the run game and when he got outside the pocket. Hello, the Saints have Taysom Hill who is a younger version of Cam Newton. Both are inconsistent from the pocket, but Taysom Hill has the huge advantage of knowing the offense. As for anyone suggesting Cam would be better than Trevor Simeon, I question the talent evaluation of that individual. I do not mean to imply that Simeon is a future All-Pro, but Cam struggled with New England last year.

The biggest factor, though, is in the locker room. All Saints fans, and anyone who covers the Saints know how important team chemistry and culture is for Sean Payton. Let's just say that Cam Newton is not a fit. The Patriots were desperate last year and we see they did not repeat the same mistake this year.

For someone that would never have considered himself a Jameis Winston fan, he did go to Florida State, I really feel bad for him. I believe he has handled himself as a true professional his entire Saints career, he won the job and the locker room.

That being said, considering how the Saints are currently constructed and have been winning games, I actually do not think much changes. This team is going to win with defense, special teams, ball control on offense, and doing the ¨little thing¨ better. This was the formula against Tampa Bay as the Bucs did just as much to lose the game as the Saints did to win the game.

The offense did its part thanks to the return of Deonte Harris. He provided just enough of a threat to scare the Tampa defense, make some third down conversions, and get hidden yardage in punt returns.

The difference to me is not where the Saints are currently. It is that the ceiling is a little lower with Simeon or Hill at quarterback. I love Taysom Hill. His attitude after losing the starting job, his willingness to play special teams, and smile after he runs past or over a defensive back. Nevertheless, the greatest potential of the Saints offense has always been with Michael Thomas returning and Jameis´ ability to get the ball downfield.

As for Simeon, he did an amazing job leading the offense against Tampa Bay, but slow your roll on making him the starting quarterback. I feel very confident with him as the backup, but Taysom is clearly the next man up if healthy. Call is the Jeremy Lin factor. Never underestimate the line between athletes performing well before there is a scouting report and after the scouting report has been developed. There is a reason the backup quarterback typically performs better as the backup than the starter.

I realize it would be much more interesting for the national media to cover a trade for a new starting quarterback in New Orleans. There is a professional sports team that is always in the news for things that do not include winning. The Pelicans have that side of sports covered. Fortunately, the Saints, under Sean Payton, just win.
