THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Against Auburn, LSU showed they can win without dominating line of scrimmage. Against Ole Miss, LSU showed they can still dominate the line of scrimmage. These facts, though encouraging, do not mean we should expect LSU to beat Alabama.

Do not spend the next two weeks convincing yourself LSU should beat the team that has won 4 National Championships in the last 8 years, has made the College Football Playoff every year it has been in existence, and will be playing in front of 100,000 of their own fans.

We can start looking to that game next week. The bye week is the perfect time to reflect, though. After 7 games, here is what you should expect from LSU on offense the rest of the year.

Expect LSU to keep getting better. The offensive line is young and improving. The whole offense is learning a new system and Canada is learning his players.

Expect LSU to struggle on offense if Guice is not healthy. He turns 6 yard runs into 20 yard runs and 1 yard runs into 4 yard runs. He threatens the defense in a way that nobody else can, and he makes other players better by taking the attention of the defense.

As long as Williams and Guice stay healthy, expect Canada to use them at the same time to stretch the defense sideline to sideline. Also, those two create space for other players, like the shovel pass.

Here is what you should not expect on offense.

Do not expect a consistent passing game to wide receivers. Etling and these receivers will have their moments, but it is not going to be consistent. The best we can expect this year is a passing game that takes advantage of what the defense gives.

On defense here is what you can expect.

Expect the defense to be effective as long as Key and Lawrence are healthy to get after the quarterback. Nobody else in the front four is really capable of collapsing the pocket.

Expect great coverage. Kevin Toliver’s discipline issue really hurt at the beginning of the year. But now, LSU’s secondary is at full capacity.

Expect LSU to give up big runs because an end does not set the edge or a linebacker does not fill the right gap. Devin White is great, but the other inside linebacker position has been a struggle.

On defense, do not expect this defense to be as good as last year’s group. Last year’s group was really special, and they just didn’t make mistakes. This year’s group doesn’t tackle as well, isn’t as strong at the point of attack, and makes mistakes that lead to big plays.

Still, I think Aranda is doing a great job, the same way I think Dennis Allen is doing a great job for the Saints. I know neither of them think this way, but look at how the Saints and Tigers start games defensively. Most games, the opponent starts fast on offense because the Saints and Tigers are not dominant defensively. But to their credit, both defenses adjust, becoming more effective in the second half, which is why I give Aranda and Allen tons of credit.

Sarcastically speaking, I think Allen’s defensive game plan was smart at Green Bay. He fooled the Packers into thinking they would be able to run the ball the whole game. The Packers took the bait and when the Saints adjusted in the second half to stop the run, the Packers kept running instead of letting the rookie quarterback do what most rookie quarterbacks do to the Saints.

Seriously, the Saints are 4-2 and in first place without coming close to hitting their stride. The offense has yet to really click for a whole game. They were close against the Packers, except Drew decided to keep Green Bay in the game early (more sarcasm for those that don’t know).

It is exciting to think that the defense is very young and we can expect them to keep improving. Meanwhile, the offense can be better. They have yet to convert third downs and take care of the ball in the same game.

Don’t worry, though, I still expect the Saints to let the Bears make it a game Sunday with Trubisky looking like Jim McMahon.

HEY REF

If we are to believe and I have no reason not to believe Florida head football coach Jim McElwain then I’d like to ask “should the FBI get involved in finding out who is calling in death threats against his team and the coach himself”. No one should more than two seconds to answer “YES” to my question. In this day and time when budgets are stretched thinner than a silver dime and resources inside our government are almost non-existent we should all hope that each and every call is handled with the utmost speed and attention so that when found those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We as a society should have no hesitation to lockup those with unstable minds that brazenly make threats which cause others to live in fear. Even in our free society we have no room to allow these individuals to walk our streets spreading terrorist type threats simply based upon the outcome of a football game and/or season. We are constantly reminded of global terror every day and in the latest example we’ve seen four of our soldiers shot and killed on a foreign soil.

And while we’ll never be able to claim victory over foreign extremists around the globe it seems domestic terror is on the rise. Whether it be a shooting in a school or mall or workplace America is under attack from within. We don’t have secure boarders so anyone or any terror group can just walk across a non-existent line and open fire. So, with all the attention being placed upon illegal immigrants and Islamic terror groups that are taking an extreme drain on America’s manpower and resources I can barely control my distain when I hear and read of so called “fans of the game” threatening to kill a coach(s) and/or players.

As everyone knows or should know that here at “Hey Ref” we deal strictly in facts. So with that in mind I will come to the defense of the Florida coach. His job so far this year has been one for the record books since he’s trying to keep his boat afloat with more than 20 scholarship players. Success and failure most of the time hinges on keeping players healthy and when the injury bug bites as it will every team you just hope and pray those injuries are of the minor variety.

Last Sunday up in Green Bay we saw a perfect example of what happens when one of your top players isn’t on the field. I’m going to say that if Aaron Rodgers had suited up then the Saints never would’ve won that game. Just watching a few plays because I don’t watch the NFL any person with an I. Q. above one could see that the Packer’s backup QB should still be in high school and not on a professional team. But here again the mistake and decision by Packer’s management to keep such a player to fill in came back to bite ‘em on the behind.

Coaches and organizations make the wrong choice many times when dealing with unknown talent. It’s no different for college and professional coaches because mistakes are what make us human. But what has no place in any level of competition is when fans call and make a threat on the life of coaches, players and us ordinary people. In their tiny little worlds all they have is football. Football is a religion in many cities and I have to admit it is a huge part of many people’s lives here in south Louisiana.

There’s a fine line that separates some people when talking about “THEIR TEAM” and how they show their support. But to those that can’t handle the reality that their team doesn’t win every week need to step away from sports. You have no right in my book to call yourself a fan after you carry things to the point of wanting someone dead. I hope I’m not in the minority on this issue. Remember it’s just a game…

Till next week…
