THE WIZARDRY OF OS
I remember listening to LSU basketball games on the radio when I was in junior high school. After an early season loss, I would make sure to listen to the post game interview with Coach Brown. I new at some point he was going to reassure the listeners that the team would improve and at the end of the season and that LSU was going back to the NCAA tournament.
I chose to reminisce about that experience because Les Miles chose to comment this week on the LSU offense going into next year. His positive statements regarding next year's unit sent me into immediate reflection and I had two thoughts.
First, the last time I heard him make comments like these he was talking about an offensive line unit that struggled mightily throughout the season.
Second, his messages are so cryptic, they are anything but reassuring. The comments had the opposite impact as to the comments Coach Brown would make.
As a result, I hope he is right, but I will not set myself up for a let down by paying much attention to them. Instead, I will watch the Chic-fil-A Bowl with keen interest regarding the development of the offense. I will let my eyes guide my impression of next year's offense.
Before we get to next year, LSU has one more game to play. I expect this game to be similar to the Texas A&M game. LSU will need to force turnovers to stop the Clemson offense which is not the type of offense that gets shut down. Clemson will gain yardage, especially early in the game.
LSU's formula for success does not change, especially against teams like Clemson. The good news is LSU should be able to take over the game in the second half with the running game. At that point, all it will take is a key turnover or great field position to make the difference in the game in LSU's favor.
HEY REF
And now the magic number is one. Not as in one more win to clinch a playoff berth but one more game to cap off a fruitless 2012 campaign. I’ve been hearing so many excuses as to “why” the Who Dats are staying put in January 2013. Some blame the suspensions, the fines, the “this” and the “that’s”.
But as you well know here in “Hey Ref’s World” we ONLY PRINT THE FACTS! And that the only reason the Saints are going to be home bodies is because they didn’t perform on the field. But how can it be so simple. That’s easy, simply put you get to the Promised Land in professional football by the number of wins you tally against the rest of your division. No matter how weak the rest of your division is the only way to get a ticket to the playoffs is to stack more wins than the rest of the other guys.
And the 2012 Saints don’t belong in the playoffs. End of discussion, sorry but that’s how you get a piece of the pie. The years of dominance in the NFL have long been a distant memory. No more will we ever see the Green Bay Packers of a Vince Lombardi, the Dallas Cowboys of Tom Landry and even the Minnesota Vikings of Bud Grant.
No, it’ll NEVER happen again. Don’t start telling me I should never say never but let me state the fact one more time for those that refuse to face the truth; you’ll NEVER see dominance again in the NFL as long as the present owners have their say so. Today’s professional game is ruled by one thing and one thing only and that is of course M-O-N-E-Y! You’ve got to be some kind of math whiz to figure out the 100’s of possibilities of matchups for next week’s playoffs.
And that sits fine with the guys who care about one thing; the BOTTOM LINE. “Money, money, gotta make more of it” and it’s the lust of the almighty dollar that’s ruined our country and everything that makes life worth living. I can remember the “Ice Bowl” where guys played in minus 20 degree weather to win a GAME. There used to be a thing called PRIDE that players would take with them everywhere they went.
No more will you see it in the professional game. It’s “what can I do to get a bigger contract when I renegotiate a deal next year”! And we bring our kids up thinking the only thing that matters is the size of your wallet. “No holds barred, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead, gotta make more dollars” should be the new motto of the NFL.
Getting back to the AINTs, don’t make excuses, you didn’t perform up to your ability, it showed week in and week out. No matter who’s calling the plays, you didn’t perform to the best of your ability and now you can do like we’ve had to do for every year but one and that is see another franchise take home the bacon.
See, that’s where the line between player and official is drawn, as an official I’ve got to bring my “A” game not just for every game but each and every play no matter the teams, nor pre-season, regular season and into the playoffs. As an official if I show up for a scrimmage and my “A” game is left at the house, I won’t get the chance to walk out onto a field for an entire year. No, I can have no remorse for a has-been team of nobodies!!
My ONLY remorse is the fact that here in Louisiana taxpayer dollars are going to prop-up millionaires!!! That’s sad, very sad. When we can’t take care of the elderly or the poor or the young we’re dolling out mega bucks to millionaires. Or am I wrong for thinking that the handicapped and elderly need our help more than a 300lb linebacker that only makes 7 million a year?????
Oh, well, till next week… …
