THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Should I write about the Saints or LSU? I wonder.
The Saints are the team that gives the impression they are trying to win a bet. Somebody made a bet that they could win with Dalton or Winston as if they were Drew Brees and nothing needed to change. Never mind that Taysom Hill is a unicorn. Never mind that every time the Saints score a bunch of points it has something to do with getting Taysom Hill involved. Using Hill would be too easy. Instead, let’s get beat with quarterbacks that have his skill set. We can’t stop them and we won’t use the skills that we cannot stop.
In the three wins, Hill has 23 carries for 254 yards. In the six losses, he has 21 carries and forget the yards. He averages over 7 carries a game in the wins and under four in the losses. He had one run against Baltimore. Passing? He is 7 of 8 for 101 yards, on the season! The Saints have a unicorn and they will not use him. I don’t think he is a starting quarterback in the NFL, but great relief pitches are used as much as possible even if they don’t have “starter stuff.” But I should not waste my time on the Saints.
How bout those Tigers?! The first biggest LSU home win in my life experience was 1997 when LSU beat Florida. The Gators were ranked #1 and had been rolling for years with Spurrier. What I did not realize at the time was that Florida was not as good that year, but more significantly, the manner in which LSU won that game was not sustainable. Two interceptions for touchdowns in one game does not happen. It was, in fact, a flukish win.
There have been many significant home wins since then, but the next home win of this significance was 2007. LSU was #1 and the favorite, but Florida had Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. By this time, I had learned that this win also made a bigger statement because it was a formula that required less chance. Sure, 5 fourth down conversions was a lot, but the conversions did not require smoke and mirrors.
My last article I wrote about how college football has come down to which team has the best quarterback, and if the two are similar, which quarterback is better that night. Going into the game, I thought Alabama had the better quarterback. If I were a NFL team I would still take Bryce Young before Jayden Daniels. But, last Saturday night, Daniels was the best quarterback on the field.
Despite those facts, LSU’s win required the running of Josh Williams. There has not been enough discussion of how Williams has developed in the Clyde Edwards-Helaire 2.0. Both are incredible in pass protection as running backs. They run with low pads, a low center of gravity, and they show great balance. In 2019 and in 2022, Alabama could not tackle either Tiger tailback. Edwards-Helaire was better at making Bama tacklers completely whiff, but both ran through contact and gained key first downs on their own.
Saturday’s win was legendary by being in overtime and going to two. In 1997, the joy lasted one week because the formula could not be duplicated from week to week. In 2022, I am even more excited because with true freshmen like Taylor, Perkins, Jones, and Campbell executing a style of play that can win at home and on the road there is every reason to believe that LSU football is back for sustained success.
