THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
I empathize with the LSU baseball coaches and baseball team right now. Everything is a struggle. Two of their SEC wins are games in which LSU fell behind, had looked inept on offense for days, and then suddenly found a way to win.
At Florida, LSU found some mysterious power source to hit 3 home runs. At Arkansas, LSU could barely hit the ball out the infield and somehow scored 10 runs to beat Arkansas. Especially on offense, nothing is coming easily.
In eight SEC starts, Alex Lange and Jared Poche have just four quality starts. Nobody expected Poche to shut people out all year, but everyone fully expected Poche to provide quality starts more often than not. As for Lange, his freshman year was legendary and his sophomore year was average. Consequently, most people, like me, expected something in the middle with consistency. We have not seen that.
I admit, it is hard to be optimistic at this point. Unless we observe that LSU is 7-5 and one game out of first place with all the faults I have listed above and more. So what if Alex Lange and Jared Poche put together a string of quality starts? What if the offense is able to find ways to put pressure on the defense and get some guys out of their slumps? Maybe LSU could have the season we all expected orr maybe it will just continue to be a struggle.
I have been trying to hold off on writing about the Saints as all the news these days is nothing but rumors. Still, I feel the need to break my silence to make clear that these had better just be rumors.
First, Adrian Peterson. Really? The Saints have proven time and again that they do just fine with free agent running backs that have a certain skill set. Adrian Peterson is not a running back that is going to be productive receiving less than 10 carries a game. Besides, the Saints need the next coming of Reggie Bush or Darren Sproles at running back. As with the Johnny Manziel story, I believe the Saints are willing to listen to anything, but that doesn’t mean they will act.
Second, Richard Sherman. Really? This would be almost as big of a disaster as Jason David or Brandon Browner. Sherman is obviously a system guy. He is great in the Seahawk’s system (with a great pass rush) and there are other systems he would do very well. He would be not be worth the price the Saints would have to pay in Dennis Allen’s schemes. On top of that, he would be terrible in the locker room.
Third, stop with all the replacing Drew Brees talk!!! Just stop!! All you mock draft people, STOP!!! The Saints already wasted a third round pick on Garrett Grayson when they didn’t have picks to waste. There is no way the Saints can afford to spend a first or second round pick on a quarterback in this year’s incredibly weak quarterback class. I feel comfortable that the Saints the signed Chase Daniel to have a “young” quarterback just in case Brees falls apart. But after three years in a row not making the playoffs, I am fairly certain Loomis and Payton understand that the time is now. If not, you won’t want to read this column after the draft as it will be an epic meltdown.
I think it is pretty clear at this point that the Saints will draft a pass rusher and a corner in the first two rounds. The corner might come by way of a trade with New England for Malcolm Butler, but that is pretty much the only option outside of the draft as far as I can tell. The same is true for an athletic pass rusher.
The moral of the story is that I think the Saints will be pretty quiet in their personnel moves until the draft.
HEY REF
Doesn’t matter the team, if they run a play and it works, many of them have the mindset to run it until the defense stops it. Seems many law firms that have recently been successful in suing the NFL AND COLLECTING HUGE JUDGEMENTS have another CASHCOW on the horizon. This new terrible wrong that the NFL teams are being accused of is dealing with the way team doctors doled out pain medicine.
Our society as a whole is being battered with the consequences of prescription medicine abuse. Most notably and the leading drug is of course Oxycontin and/or its generic Oxycodone. It’s a drug I’m all too familiar with having been on this medication for over 20 years due to several surgeries on my knees, back, elbow, hand and stomach. It’s a drug I hate to use and there have been many, many times I just endured the pain because of the horrible side effects. Terrible things like constant indigestion, becoming severely impacted (constipation) so much so it required an emergency room visit on a few occasions.
To be frank and honest about pain medications (no matter the form) the truth is they DO NOTHING TO STOP THE PAIN. As my doctor explained “the only thing these medications do is they block that part of the brain that receives the message a particular part of the body is in distress which translates to you feeling pain”. He further stated that when the body finishes processing the drug the pain receptors once again register pain, it’s what they do.
Any normal human being should be able to then come to the realization that pain will continue to invade the body until either the body repairs itself naturally or after a procedure (surgery) and the recommended rest period. I mean this isn’t rocket science people. To further explain pain is to also mention if you continue in the behavior that caused the injury/pain in the first place you can be reassured pain will also return until you cease the offending habits or you’ve continued damaging those body parts that the injury then becomes a permanent part of your life.
So, if you’ve read just those few lines then you’ll be able to make a decision to stop the behavior or risk turning an injury into what can be a lifetime of continued pain. Then if you don’t something more destructible settles into your daily life and that is drug addiction. It’s a no win solution when you depend on drugs to help you get through the day. This isn’t a mystery by any stretch of the imagination and I know what I’ve just written is accepted knowledge to anyone with an IQ of more than 5.
Everybody knows this so with all that I’ve said it just amazes me that the NFL players association is once again filing a lawsuit against the league claiming that team doctors dispensed pain meds recklessly which of course they claim isn’t anyone else’s fault except the team doctors. One internet site has bold headlines “NFL DRUG CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. If you are a former NFL player we welcome to learn more about a lawsuit filed on your behalf”! It goes on saying “With replacements sitting on the sidelines just waiting for their chance and few guaranteed contracts, players in the NFL have little choice in the face of injury but to play through it”.
Then of course the lawyers blame owners and our culture that allows players to obtain, use and misuse painkillers and on and on. I can’t read any more of this bullshucks! So it looks like the lawyers are also getting ready to file suit against our culture since we can’t blame the drug users for their behavior.
Once again we see that nobody in this liberal tainted country has to stand up and face their own decisions and admit it was their personal behavior that’s led to them abusing drugs. The fact is the players want to stay in “The Big Show” and will do anything and everything to play a game for the millions of dollars these owners throw at players. Since the NFL is a billion dollar industry and lawyers were successful in placing the blame for the problems of continued concussions on the league then I guess this also looks like a huge payday for the lawyers and their collective practices.
These lawyers raked in millions upon millions of dollars by blaming others and not the players for their behavior. Maybe some doctors did in fact administer drugs illegally but it takes two to tango and the players themselves are to blame for their own drug problems. This case sounds like the drunk whose facing the judge and blames his DWI arrest on the clerk that checked him out at the corner 7-11. Nobody forced him to drink a few six packs, no he did that on his own and he needs to accept the fact that it was his drinking that caused his arrest.
Same for those that demand pain meds and will do whatever it’ll take to obtain another few hundred pills. Society is in decline and if the lawyers along with the greedy don’t stop this insane crap of coming up with another suit to file there won’t be an NFL. There won’t be much left of our nation unless individuals take responsibility for their own actions!!!
Till next week…
