THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

The 2018 LSU baseball team has to be driving Paul Mainieri crazy. Over the years, Paul Mainieri teams can be expected to play great defense, throw strikes, and make the other team beat them.

This year, LSU seemingly has one game a week where they collapse in one area of the game and lose as a result. Yet there is still great hope for this team.

The batting lineup needs a few anchors and that means Zach Watson needs to be healthy, Antoine Duplantis needs to get hot, and Josh Smith needs to get healthy. I suspect Josh Smith will go back to hitting leadoff when he returns, but I want to go on the record supporting Watson to stay at leadoff. We are still a few weeks away from Smith’s return, but I would like to see Watson, Smith, Duplantis, Bain or Jordan, then Feduccia hitting 1-5.

This lineup could be pretty explosive because that would put Broussard (who has been tremendous) hitting ninth and turning the lineup over frequently to get Watson more at bats. Broussard, Watson, Smith, and Duplantis bring great speed as well.

That being said, I suspect Mainieri is projecting Smith, Broussard, Duplantis, Watson, and Feduccia batting 1-5. That would probably result in Chris Reid hitting ninth if he continues to stay effective in the lineup drawing walks, working counts, and making solid contact.

Coming into the year, LSU was expecting AJ Labas and Nick Storz to play a major role on the pitching staff. Due to injuries, we have had to wait, but Labas has not disappointed in his three appearances. Storz will have had his first start by the time you read this article. If Storz is close to as effective as Labas has been, LSU will have its deepest starting rotation since Mainieri has been LSU’s coach.

Hess, Gilbert, Hilliard, Labas, and Storz would be five quality starting pitchers if Labas and Storz continue to progress. Naturally, college baseball teams rarely need a 5th starter, so any one of those five could be used out of the bullpen. Though, Hess is clearly the Friday night, Game 1 starter at this point. Another option would be to move Gilbert back to the bullpen where his fastball had more mustard last year.

The good news is Dunn and Mainieri would have a ton of options to hopefully bolster a bullpen that has looked pretty shaky the last few weeks.

I am going to completely skip over the NCAA Tournament, and make a quick point on basketball. If you are a fan of LSU basketball and you are not counting the days until the 2019 starts, you are not a fan of LSU basketball.

Now take a huge sigh of relief, because I know I did when Drew Brees signed. Not because I thought he wouldn’t, but for once, it was as easy as it should have been.

The other free agent moves from the Saints have me nodding my head in understanding or tilting my head to the side like a dog that saw smelled something odd.

I have already stamped my approval on the signing of Kurt Coleman. Bringing back Jermon Bushrod after Zack Strief retired makes sense on the field and in the locker room.

Demario Davis, on the other hand, has me tilting my head. Not because Davis isn’t a good player, but that the Saints decided to invest in a player at that position. The Saints have a good bit invested in Teo and Klein. All three are middle linebackers by trade. Who is moving?

The return of Patrick Robinson makes sense by position, but I question the choice of player. The Saints have a habit of signing veteran defensive backs that were good in another system with a great defensive line that just won a Super Bowl. Jason David and Brandon Browner come to mind with horrific results. I hope that isn’t the case with P-Rob, but I will have to see it to believe it.

I must take a moment to express my gratitude for Tom Benson. Fortunately, I am young enough to where I didn’t have to suffer through many pre-Benson years. The Benson Boogie capsulized the city and fandom of New Orleans fans.

I am usually all in all about the fans of a team and don’t have a positive opinion of the owners. But in this case, Benson and New Orleans were the perfect match of owner and city. If you haven’t read what Sean Payton wrote about Benson, take a few minutes and read it. Payton makes it clear that a quality owner who hires good people and supports them is as valuable as the team that is owned.
