“QUOTE, UNQUOTE”

“One thing LSU knows it has going for it this weekend is that playing a team that has USL students on it… the Tigers know they won’t get outsmarted on the field”

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

This would be the week of what we thought we knew in college baseball, we didn't really know.

We thought LSU and Texas A&M had incredible offenses that could only be slowed down for a few innings at a time. Yet, great pitching and defense led to low scoring, wonderfully entertaining games that were decided in the last inning or in many extra innings. Yet, both teams found ways to advance.

Be careful to assume this means all the Super Regional games will be the same, though. Somehow baseball has a way of providing the opposite of what is expected.

Speaking of the LSU offense, many Tiger fans have called the LSU offense "slump proof." Two runs or less in three of the last four games qualifies as a bit of a slump to me. Baseball is a game of percentages though, and sooner or later the odds swing against you. The great news for LSU fans is that the offense struggled to produce runs at exactly the same time the Lange and Poche pitched their best games of the year.

So what does all of this mean for LSU and ULL? Probably a high scoring regional where the bull pens decide the game. I am encouraged and worried at the same time. LSU is winning even though they seem to be a cylinder off from clicking on all cylinders. That is a good thing that they have shown the versatility to win many different ways. The defense has been a constant. Still, I would love to see the offense, and pitching get rolling on the same weekend.

Meanwhile the Pelicans have hired Alvin Gentry. Opinions seem to be pretty polarized on the hire. My hope is that Demps and Gentry will be on the same page since the most effective professional organizations have symbiosis between management and coaches.

I don't put much stock into "offensive" vs "defensive" coaches at the NBA level. I just don't believe that is high the list of attributes a NBA head coach needs in order to be successful. Managing minutes, effective utilization of all 12 men on the roster, motivation throughout a long season, utilizing individual talent within a system, and putting a staff together that develops players are infinitely more important qualities to name a few.

I think Gentry could have a number of advantages in his favor beyond the obvious, Anthony Davis. This year's roster should be pretty stable for the third year in a row which can be rare in the NBA. The nucleus was extremely young three year's ago, but now it has some experience, and thankfully some playoff experience.

I doubt the Pelicans make a Golden State type jump, the roster is just not as good. Still, I think a mid 50 win season would be a fair expectation at this point with the potential to win more.

HEY REF

Who says wining will make you a rich man? Sure ain’t Carolina Panther’s owner Jerry Richardson. He just offered his quarterback, Cam Newton a five year $103.7 million dollar contract with a cool $60 million GUARATEED! Newton signed the contract Tuesday before Richardson could come to his senses. Newton’s record for the past four years is an impressive 30-31-1and 1-2 in playoff games. That’s right; Newton doesn’t have a winning record nor is he very accurate with a combined, 4 year percentage rate of just 59.5 percent. But he has sold millions of tickets, jerseys, T-shirts and the like.

This is the new NFL where winning isn’t everything, it’s what you sell and your worth is directly based on marketing worth. Newton’s new contract is second highest in the NFL for quarterbacks with San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick a scant $1 million higher. What he doesn’t do with his arms he makes up for it whit his legs. He’s rushed for 2,571 yards with 33 touchdowns.

Here are the top 10 guaranteed money makers playing quarterback; 1) Colin Kaepernick, $61 million, 2) Cam Newton, $60 million, 3) Tony Romo, $55 million, 4) Aaron Rodgers, $54 million, 5) Jay Cutler, $54 million, 6) Sam Bradford, $50 million, 7) Ryan Tannehill, $45 million, 8) Matt Ryan, $42 million, 9) Matthew Stafford, $41.5 million and Drew Brees, $40 million.

Minnesota had some “good” news this week as suspended running back Adrian Peterson has reported to the Vikings stating “I didn’t know what I wanted after being suspended by the league”. That answer was in reference to his threat he was walking away from football for the way he was treated after discipline his young song. Peterson says he wants more than the $45 million and three years left on his present contract.

He did not report for any of the three team organized practices last week and stated he had a family commitment and wasn’t able to report to the Viking’s practices. Neither the money nor the length of the contract is guaranteed and he’s stated he wants “more money that what’s on the present contract and wants the money guaranteed”. Only $12.75 million is guaranteed for the 2015 season which has angered the former NFL MVP.

His agents, Ben Dogra, said the Vikings have made no assurances that they are willing to change anything on his “present contract”. Peterson also said he was upset at the lack of support shown him last year when child abuse charges were brought against him and named COO Kevin Warren as the worst.

I just don’t feel Newton deserves the money because his salary isn’t related to how he performs on the field. He sells T-Shirts and puts butts in the seats and that’s what matters in the NFL now. After all the teams are owned by business owners who feel the only thing that matters is the bottom line. But again, that’s what has brought this country to its knees.

Where will it end? At this point in time, I much don’t care or respect the owners and/or players that make up this once great sport. Money seems to ruin everything in life. America’s game, baseball is in serious trouble also and MONEY is the root to most of its problems.

Till next week…
