There isn’t anything better in sports than a championship game where players make championship plays and the winner makes the last play to win the game. Monday night’s game reminded me of the Villanova against North Carolina last spring.
You can disregard all the talk about officiating or coaching deciding the game on Monday night. The players from Clemson won that game. I also fully believe that the players from Alabama would have found a way to win that game if they had been given one more chance. It was that type of a game.
Let me repeat. Ignore the headlines. The Lane Kiffin factor was no factor in the game. Alabama had more yards against Clemson than they did against Washington. The Tide was terrible on 3rd downs in both games, 4-14 against Washington and 2-15 against Clemson. Alabama had more rushing attempts against Washington, but they played with a large lead for most of the game and Scarbrough didn’t break his leg.
The fact is that Clemson has played Bama as well anyone the last two years so there has to be a reason. The reason is pretty obvious. Good scheme plus great players create big plays.
Alabama rarely gives up big plays and when they do it is not because they get “beat” deep. A receiver has to make a play, a quarterback has to make something happen on a broken play, or every once in a while you can catch Bama is a blitz with the right call.
Clemson made 200 of their 500 yards on 8 plays. One was the screen to Cain for 43 yards which is the right play at the right time and great execution. 4 passes were to Clemson’s tight end Leggett who is a great receiving tight end who on a couple of catches made great plays. Of course, Renfroe got free a few times which is possible if you can protect long enough to get a crossing route against the Tide with the right matchup. Finally, Williams just went up and got the ball a few times. The whole time, Bama had to worry about Watson making plays with his feet, so that effects the Tide’s plan a bit.
My point is that Clemson has the right personnel with a great quarterback, is very well coached, and their talented players made plays. Back shoulder fades, high pointing the ball against tight coverage, and standing in to completing a pass when you know you are going to get hit as the quarterback is how Clemson won that game. I give the coaches credit for recruiting the players, teaching execution, and giving their players the opportunities to make plays. The Clemson Tigers made championship plays and won as a result.
So get that through your head Tiger fans. The last time LSU beat Alabama, Eric Reid made an unbelievable play when Bama had actually fooled LSU. Brad Wing hit a great punt. LSU has to get to the point where the offensive players are able to execute and make great plays against great defense. It is more about execution and making big time plays when the opportunity presents itself, than out scheming Alabama.
Hopefully, LSU is able to reach that level soon.
HEY REF
If ever I found an article that was just down right and completely wrong it’s got to be the one concerning the status of today’s collegiate sporting world. In gigantic, bold headlines it says “New Poll; Fans don’t favor paying athletes”. While I find this statement untrue I just had to stop everything I was doing to read for myself what information was disclosed in this so called “Poll” of sports fans.
The whole article was very short but what I found odd was that nowhere in it did it give out the numbers of fans questioned, their ages, demographics, etc., etc., etc. And it never released any details on the so called anti pay for the “student-athletes”. Well that term, student-athlete, went the way of the dinosaurs since there ain’t no such thing around anymore. They should be referred to as to what they actually are and that is “university employees”.
If you’ve read this column with any regularity you’ll know this writer’s stance on paying “employees”. From now on I’ll never write student-athlete since they are extinct. Getting back to the poll, of those answering the question concerning putting athletes on a school’s payroll the results show that 67 percent of those answering, up 12 percent, actually don’t believe or support paying athletes a salary. And this poll also reported that nearly 70% believe that universities break NCAA rules. That number should be a lot higher since the “code of ethics” (Rules governing schools) is so broad and covers more items than the number of animals in Noah’s Ark.
The increase, those turning a thumbs down on paying athletes, stems from two highly publicized cases; Harvard and Miami. In the Harvard case which sounds just too funny to be true but they report the school issued academic sanctions against approximately 60 students for a cheating scandal on the final exam in a class on of all subjects; CONGRESS!
Now come on, this has to be made up. Maybe the students started studying the way our Congress works and decided stealing, lying and cheating is the way to get what you want. I mean, after all that’s exactly how our Congress works. It’s got nothing to do with accepting the salary being advertised for the job holder, oh no! We all know it ain’t what you earn but what you’re able to steal and get away with. Well, isn’t that the way not only our lawmakers are perceived but how the vast majority of people get ahead?
Oh, sure, I can hear it now, how can I write something like that? I can write something like that since a few of my bad “habits” is to read the paper every day, watch the afternoon and evening news reports and to top things off, log onto ESPN and enjoy another case of “What can I get away with more today”? Those stories aren’t hidden; they’re on the front page, the last page and everywhere else in between. You can read story after story of another person and/or business trying to cheat the system. Being a thief is something that’s learned and passed down.
Allow me to put a couple names out there you might recognizes; Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Lance Armstrong. All three swore on the Bible they don’t do drugs, don’t lie, don’t steal but it’s been proven in a court of law they’re all liars. If you just look at Mr. Armstrong’s case for years he’d tell everybody that would listen he’s “squeaky” clean. The court of common sense should tell you all you need to know about the other two.
But as I read the article it didn’t say anything about the Miami case. I find that odd since the Hurricanes are known for going way outside the lines of the law and the rules. I guess maybe nobody had room for “old” news? So, as I finished the short column not a single word on the so called vote on not paying employees (players).
I mean the whole reason for a headline is to get the reader to notice something they may want to read. As in my case, I just wanted to see how many ignorant people there were that answered “no” to this question. In this day and time it really shouldn’t surprise me, I mean the working people of this country can’t stand to see another worker get ahead. Big business was very successful in their “Divide and conquer” war against those that have to punch a clock to make a living.
The NCAA receives in excess of $8 BILLION, that’s right with a “B”, AMERICAN DOLLARS for their basketball tournament. That’s a three year old figure since we’re still waiting to get a final one for the last year and won’t have a final for 2015 for at least another 12 months. I don’t understand why. Maybe some reader could tell me.
In other words the NCAA gets an entire NFL budget on just one single sporting event. Don’t start about all the sports that never make a profit and are supported by basketball and football. The ONLY and I do mean ONLY reason those sports are still on the books is because so many students still play those sports and the families of these kids are the reason Deans keep footing the bills. Mom and Dad still have some clout or maybe I should say “You don’t bite the hand that feeds you” so it’s sort of a tradeoff.
But to not pay the employees that generate BILLIONS of these dollars that you so rapidly put in your pockets, cars and even a freezer or two is not right. In “Hey Ref’s” world it will never be right and should be abolished ASAP if not sooner. Pay those that make it possible for everybody to eat steak and still have enough left over to take in a movie! Without these young 19-21 year old athletes (non-paid employees) not a single university could generate these vast sums of dollars on their own. To finish maybe if these young employees were paid a livable wage they’d stick around a little more often. Forget that last comment, MONEY TALKS, BS WALKS and until this modern day version of slavery ends and players do get a salary I’ll be in the front of the line supporting salaries for these young employees.
Till next week… …
