THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
The Pelicans have demonstrated discipline for once and will be better as a result.
Let’s be clear, the Pelicans were not winning the NBA Title next year with Cousins and Rondo on the roster. They had both were on the team this year and never looked like a championship team. The Pels actually played their best basketball without Cousins because they could defend pick and rolls better and didn’t have one player turning the ball over five times a game.
Had the Pelicans signed Cousins they would have had to overpay for a player coming off a serious injury that would not be ready for the beginning of the year. Who thought that was a good idea? NBA experts that think the way to create a winning team is to get the best “name” players possible. Apparently, not many NBA teams agreed which is why Cousins settled for signing with Golden State. That being said, I think this is a brilliant move by Cousins and I hope he gets healthy and plays well.
Before I move back to the Pelicans, let’s also calm down on Cousins’ signing with the Warriors being the worst thing that has ever happened to the NBA. I understand how people have to take different stances just to keep offseason talk going. In my mind, the NBA has had their best week of free agency in years
First, LeBron is out of the East so a new team has a chance to make the Finals. The Celtics or Sixers are very likely and that is great for the NBA. Even the Raptors would be OK.
Second, LeBron makes the Lakers relevant again. The NBA had a break from Laker dominance which was good, but it is time for LA to get back in the spotlight.
Third, one of two things will happen. One possibility would be LeBron pulling off a miracle and making the Finals again but with LA which will be fabulous for the league. Could you imagine the Lakers and Celtics in the Finals this time with LeBron versus Kyrie?! If it doesn’t happen in 2019, the betting odds look good for 2020.
The other possibility is the Lakers make the playoffs, but not the Finals, which would still be fabulous for the league. The early playoff series would draw more attention than normal and the Finals would be more interesting even if it is the Warriors as it would be a new, fresh challenge.
Back to the Pelicans, they really did as well as they could. They have replaced Rondo with a younger version in Elfrid Payton. Both are big guards who are very good athletes that do not shoot well. Rondo averaged 10 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 3 turnovers a game last year with Anthony Davis. Payton averaged 11 points, 6 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.5 turnovers a game without Anthony Davis. Both had an effective field goal percentage around 48%. Rondo is a great leader and great in the locker room which cannot be measured.
Still, Payton’s role on the court will be the same as Rondo’s. Run the point so Holiday can play off the ball. Push the ball up the court as quickly as possible, get the ball to Anthony Davis quickly around the goal, and set up shooters. Considering Payton’s youth and discount price, I consider it a great deal for one year to see how it goes.
As for replacing Cousins, I already wrote this spring how well Mirotic filled that role. Julius Randle will do the same with more athleticism, though neither Randle or Cousins have been confused for lock down defenders.
As a reminder, Cousins was averaging 21 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 turnovers with an effective field goal percentage of 53% when he got hurt. Julius Randle, on a bad team (again, not with Anthony Davis), averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 turnovers while shooting an effective field goal percentage of 56%.
Randle should only get better considering his youth. Also, we all know how playing with Anthony Davis at the tempo that Gentry insists upon can make things easier on a player.
Before you think I am just over the top optimistic, don’t worry because I have some perspective. The Pels are still woeful at small forward and the West got more difficult this offseason. Nevertheless, the Pelicans are in position to be a good team next year and even a playoff team if they stay healthy. More importantly, they are in position to add a quality piece to the puzzle next year meaning the future still looks bright.
HEY REF
I’ve been trying to come up with the proper words to describe what has just happened to basketball fans in Cleveland yet again. LeBron’s latest stunt just confirms what we’ve already known, “MONEY TALKS, BS WALKS”. Take a close look at the details, excuse me all we need to do is look at the dollars LeBron will be putting in his wallet for a short 4 year span; $153,312,846.00.
LeBron’s average salary is $38,328,212.00. The first year he collects $35.6 million, year 2 he gets a little raise to $37.4 mill, year 3 another small raise to $39.2 mill and IF he stays for the entire length of this latest contract he’ll collect $41 MILLION… …
Let’s go back to 2003 when he first joined the NBA and it seems the 3 year deal with a salary of just $12.9 million is a slap to his face. In 2004 Cleveland exercised their option for one more year and a salary of $5.8 million. Now that’s just one season. He signs a four year deal in ’06 staying with the Cavs for $60.4 million or an average paycheck of roughly $15 million.
After he was traded to Miami he exercised early termination of said contract and signed a 2 year $42.2 million dollar contract with Cleveland. In June 2015 he declined the option to play for the $21.6 million the final year of that contract. He then agreed to play for $24 million in 2016. He then again declined the option to continue playing but did sign a three year $100 million contract to stay in Ohio. But true to his self in year two of a three year contract in June 2018 declined to play the final year of his contract that would’ve paid him $35.6 million if he stayed in Cleveland. Then in less than 30 days he signed a four year deal with the Lakers paying him $153.5 million. No one expects him to stay in LA more than 2 years if he doesn’t win another NBA Title.
We all know the story of how he dissed the Cleveland faithful and took the money to play in Miami. The Cleveland fans took to the streets burning his jersey and so on because they feel he screwed them when he jumped ship to win a championship with the Heat. But after that little contract ended he came back to the Cavs and all was forgiven because on the return trip Cleveland won an NBA Title.
Now he jumps ship again in his greed to get more dollars. I’m gonna just lay it out on the line; this latest move has nothing to do about winning and instead is all about the millions. I used to think these mega contracts wouldn’t affect me since I don’t go to NBA games and never will. The truth is these mega contracts affect us all simply because the NBA just like the NFL and MLB charge millions to air product commercials.
Many moons ago I saw a 30 second commercial during a Super Bowl for a triple blade razor that cost just $2.50. So I attempted to do the math and I must confess I’m not too good with numbers but I do realize you’ve got to sell boat loads of these $2.50 razors earning enough profit from those sales to pay for a 30 second $5 million dollar spot during “The Game”.
I guess what really burns me the wrong way is how these hypocrites try to look legit. These guys know just one thing, MONEY! They think sponsoring a camp for 10 to 12 year olds and giving each one a T-shirt in some way justifies all the zillions of dollars they’re paid to play a kid’s game.
With all they could be doing with these millions and millions of dollars. You’d think they’d make an attempt to stop all the killing happening in every American city. Young black males are being slaughtered by the hundreds and nobody seems to have an answer. They have the power to do something but they just turn their heads not wanting to be bothered. They act like they’re something special since they can bounce a round ball and jump ten feet in the air then SLAM the ball through a wire hoop.
I guess I’m just one of those guys that think ignoring the problem won’t do a thing to change anyone’s life. I do know all the ignoring of the problem will doom more and more families to become victims of the hate on our streets and in our cities. Just once I’d like to see one of these multi-millionaires stand up and say enough is enough. We’re raising a country of fatherless families. Oh, well as long as we keep selling out arenas we’ll be fine…
That is until a member of your family doesn’t make his 21st birthday then this problem will get your attention and you’ll ask “WHY”?
Till next week…
