THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Les Miles has now done something I never thought he would do. He has been accurately describing his team’s progress and performances in fall practice. The defense was fast and tough to move the ball against, while the offense was balanced. Yet, overall you can’t help but notice the sloppy play at times.

The buzzword I keep reading and hearing is that the team lacked the killer instinct Saturday night against TCU. Personally, I think the Tigers provided the defibrillator each time the Frogs were on the brink of being put away. The good news is I don’t really care and neither should you. For a season opener with the lack of returning experience, the Tigers did just fine and got the win. There is no reason to believe this team can’t or won’t improve tremendously. By my count, LSU was four plays away from winning 44-6 (Beckham drop, Ferguson penalty, Blue fumble, and kickoff return).

The defense played much better than the 27 points surrendered suggest. The other issue continues to be the offense inside the 10 yard line (not red zone as most say, but the bright red zone). I think that issue can be solved by personnel. For some reason LSU insists on taking out their most effective playmakers in that area of the field, Beckham and Landry, for extra tight ends and full backs. As you saw on the Magee three yard TD run, it is harder to defend the run in that area of the field when the offense stretches horizontally with quality receivers that have to be covered.

Again, these areas of concern are correctable because the talent is abundant. Beckham and Landry will have outstanding years if Beckham can eliminate the drops. Mettenberger has arrived and I can tell you the exact moment I came to that conclusion. It was third down and he threw a perfect back shoulder fade on a route where he and Beckham made the same read (not necessarily by play call).

The next two weeks are perfectly set up for this team to develop. The Tigers need to develop continuity in the running game, develop the intermediate passing game which will increase efficiency, and develop depth with the defensive tackles. I like the plan Chavis had against TCU to hide the lack of experience from the defensive tackles. He used a three man line with one tackle and two ends. This strategy will be effective against spread teams, but Georgia, Alabama, and Florida will test the depth of the front four.

Speaking of Alabama and Georgia, they both showed ability and vulnerability. Consequently, LSU has a great opportunity to win those games on the road. But, just as the Tigers will certainly improve so with the Tide and Dogs. Not to mention, those games are still on the road.

My biggest criticism from Saturday is about college football in general. Four hours is too long for football. When two spread teams play that throw 60 times each I can understand a long game, but all games are now three and a half hours or longer. The easiest fix is to keep the clock moving after a first down, and I don’t know why that change hasn’t been made yet. With all the talk about player safety, I think the time has come.

My last thought on college football is largely rhetorical, but can someone explain why Kentucky and Western Kentucky played in Tennessee?

HEY REF

Since we are only a few hours away from kicking off the new 2013 NFL season, I’d like to do a little HEY REF’S style of kicking. This week I’m letting the fans get their wish with a little thing we call “The Best of Hey Ref” and reprint one of their favorites. Let’s reminisce to the olden days when it looked as though we’d have no professional football in 2011.

So, without too much editing here’s a fan fave when we just threw some punches and where they landed really didn’t matter since each punch was peppered with nothing but good ‘ole truth!! So, fans readers enjoy, this one’s for you!

There’s a DIFFERENCE in what’s said and what’s left to wonder. Last week NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that he’s willing to take a $10 million dollar pay cut if “there’s a work stoppage” when the current CBA with the players expires. He boldly proclaims that he’ll take a $1.00 salary in 2011 if a “work stoppage” occurs. Many in the sporting world are standing and cheering his bold leadership.

But before you go out and place bets on his word alone let me cut through the BS. For what it’s worth his “grandstanding” proclamation might come back to haunt him. I don’t intend to “pull the rug from under anyone’s foot but… ” This time around you needn’t read between the lines or the small print. Read his words, not what you hope to read.

What the commissioner didn’t say should be more alarming then what he did. He didn’t say “if there’s a LOCK-OUT”!! Anyone find it funny how he omitted including the possibility of the owners locking the gates and keeping the players from reporting to work? A lock-out by owners is a 99.9999% reality. Why didn’t Mr. Goodell phrase his statement identically as the new contracts between the owners and the T. V. networks?

In those new contracts the wording goes something like “in the event of a WORK STOPPAGE payments will be made to the owners. A LOCK-OUT will be considered the same as a WORK STOPPAGE”. This is what the players are so up-in-arms about. The players have made request after request that the T. V. networks split any monies paid in the event of a strike by players (work stoppage) or lock-out (by owners).

Time after time the owners have nixed any hint of splitting the cash equally among the two parties. In early November 2010 the players sent a request to the owners to CONTINUE TO WORK UNDER THE PRESENT CONTRACT until a new contract is signed. And as expected the owners turned that proposition down. The owners will be paid no matter how contract negotiations go with the players. So there is no incentive for them to sit down and negotiate. They won’t miss a paycheck thanks to the newly signed contracts with the networks.

Facts don’t lie just the same as DNA. In the year just completed, 2010, 65 of the top 100 sporting events were NFL games. The owners contend they are losing money, that they need a bail-out. (Sound familiar?) They each want new, billion dollar stadiums and of course expect taxpayers to foot much of the bill. I just don’t go along with tax dollars going to subsidize millionaires and/or private business.

At a family gathering I said Louisiana’s citizens shouldn’t be donating to Tom Benson and the New Orleans Saints. I was rebutted by some that said the Saints bring in billions of dollars to our state. All though this may be true I feel if we’re (taxpayers) going to pony up millions of hard earned tax dollars it should go to businesses that bring in high paying, high tech jobs. Let’s

be honest, the vast majority of jobs created by sporting events are low paying service industry jobs.

How many of us can support families by making beds, cleaning hotel rooms, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to the privileged? The NFL regular season is sixteen weeks long. That guarantees each team, city ONLY EIGHT (8) home games. So at its very best the vast majority of cities are looking at no more than eight weekends or sixteen days to rely on professional football to contribute to the “kitty”! That leaves forty four weekends and/or THREE HUNDRED FORTY NINE (349) DAYS out of the year without any direct influence by the NFL!!! Not a fair tradeoff by any stretch of the imagination.

For fans of the NFL this could be the last weekend to enjoy a game for a very long time. I hope cooler heads prevail and this entire nastiness among the owners and players gets settled. Something I haven’t heard from either side is the fate of those dependent upon the many jobs associated with putting on the “Big Show”. Seems the only time any mention is made of those individuals is when owners and politicians want the nickels and pennies in their pockets.

Before I close this week I’d like to make one comment concerning the present situation with H. S. principals and the various associations CONTRACTED to work their games. Presently only basketball officials have gone on strike. Brother officials all I can say is you’ve made one very BIG MISTAKE!!

Being a retired Union Electrician (30 years) my advice to all of you is to GO BACK TO WORK!! You’ve got a contract in effect for the remainder of the school year and YOU MUST HONOR THAT CONTRACT! ‘Nuff said… …

‘Till next week… …

A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINES

HS Sportscaster, WWL Radio, New Orleans

Opening Week of Prep Football!! And oh yea, Baseball

Well the Jamboree’s are done and it is time for opening week of the 2013 Prep Football season! There are plenty of interesting matchups this week across the state, Dutchtown vs. Lutcher, Parkview Baptist vs. Catholic and Edna Carr vs. St. Paul’s, just to mention a few, so get and support your favorite team or catch the best game in your area.

Is it just me, but it seem like the Jamboree’s are becoming more and more like NFL pre-season football. Just not enough substance to get excited about. I would prefer to see an additional game or reduce it to a scrimmage. They just don’t seem as significant as they once were; maybe it’s my old age!

Let’s talk about some of the potential highlights this year. Is this the year that Plaquemine beats Lutcher? Plaquemine is very good on both offense and defense. They have an excellent running back in Julius Maracalin and, of course, the defense is led by Davon Godcheaux. I think Coach Paul Distafano has the talent to win the district this year, barring any key injuries. Keep an eye out for that October 25 game at Lutcher, maybe one of the better games of the year to see.

Catholic High is also a team with a lot of potential, again led on offense by talent at the running back position and experience at the quarterback position. Running back Derrius Guice is developing into a special player. Nick Coomes brings experience to the quarterback experience and the addition of Eric Held to the coaching staff should make Catholic a powerful offensive team. Catholic plays a tough schedule with the likes of Parkview Baptist, Mandeville, Denham Springs and Archbishop Rummel and Salman on the schedule before district opens. District doesn’t get any easier with Dutchtown, St. Amant, Woodlawn, East Acension and McKinley. They will definitely enter the playoffs with experience against some tough teams. If you go to this game, look for me, as I am covering the game for WWL New Orleans.

I will look at more teams as the season progresses; these are just two that piqued my interests. I did go see Rummel and St. Paul’s on Friday and both teams were not very impressive. The coaches certainly have a lot of film to show the players this week. Rummel ended up winning, but I know Jay Roth was not very happy with the execution. St. Paul’s really needs to get to worked as they entertain 4A number 1 Edna Karr this Friday!!

The local area schedule will be one of the best in recent years, make sure you get out and see a game this week.

I have tried to avoid addressing the incident in Boston a couple of weeks ago involving Ryan Dempster and Alex Rodriguez. But with an upcoming Yankees-Red Sox series I assure you the Yankees did not forget that Dempster threw at A-Rod. Home plate umpire Brian O’Nora elected NOT to warn Dempster when he threw the first pitch behind A-Rod and issued a warning after Dempster hit Rodriguez 3 pitches later. If you watch the series, be aware that the potential for retaliation is high, so is a bench emptying brawl.

On a closing note in MLB, Detroit has had some great pitching and Miguel Cabrera could possibly win another triple crown, although a recent injury has slowed his homerun production down. Detroit is my team to win the series right now. Also Kevin Gauseman has a couple of nice oputings in relief for the Baltimore Orioles. He had great velocity on his fastball (96-98) with good location combined with a very good change and breaking ball. Look for him to get a few starts as the year winds down
