THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

With the Saints and LSU on a five game losing streak, I believe I need Thanksgiving more than in recent years. I need to remind myself of all the good things I have in the sports world.

On my way home from the Saints game (my one game a year), I started to think of things I am thankful for and that led me to thinking of others as well. So here is a list of my sports blessings and some blessings I have contemplated for others.

I am thankful for Sean Payton and Drew Brees. Neither is having their best year. Yet as I sat in the Dome, I remembered what is was like to watch the Saints play growing up. The Dome Patrol years were great. Still, Brees' TD pass to Colston, the reverse to open the game, and many other plays are sights I only saw from the opponents of the Saints growing up.

The place kickers on the teams who have played the Saints should be thankful for whatever voodoo is going on this year. Opposing kickers have yet to miss a field goal against the Saints all year.

I am thankful the rest of the country is seeing how good the talent was on LSU's offense last year, and those guys are having success in the NFL. Furthermore, all of them were raised in Louisiana, except Mettenberger.

I am thankful for Dellenger's article in The Advocate breaking down the quarterback issues LSU has had the last ten years. I am glad he spoke to Crowton and got real insight. At the same time, I can't believe he didn't ask the one question every outsider wants to know. Why does LSU continue to recruit drop back AND dual threat quarterbacks? In the article, Dellenger has some stats on the success rate of SEC quarterbacks at each school. Every school has attrition. Yet, by signing two different style quarterbacks, LSU has cut in half the chances of success of those quarterbacks being successful. When LSU has a drop back quarterback, they adopt that style and the dual threat quarterback leaves. When LSU decides to go with a dual threat, the drop back quarterback leaves.

Perplexing, is that LSU does not employ the same strategy at other positions. Almost every running back is big and powerful. Almost all wide receivers a tall and physical. We could go position by position and see a consistent philosophy and style. Every position, except the most important on the field.

I am thankful LSU won't be playing on Thanksgiving night at home against A&M. Likewise Aggie fans should feel extremely blessed that they found the SEC and the league has been so accommodating of their tradition.

Speaking of opposing fans, Missouri fans have the most to be thankful. They have a good team and a great coach. In addition, they had the greatest league schedule possible this year. They play in the weakest division since the SEC went to division play. On top of that, the two teams they drew from the West were Arkansas and A&M!

Cleveland Brown fans should be utterly grateful their team started and stuck with Brian Hoyer. They have had more success than anyone imagined in a tough division. Where are all the people that thought the Brown were crazy not to start Manziel from day one now?

Finally, I am thankful Jon Fine allows me to write this column. It is extremely therapeutic in football seasons like we are experiencing in Louisiana.

Happy Thanksgiving!

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

The game of football has many lines. Let’s see there are goal lines, sidelines, defensive lines, offensive lines and even end lines. Baseball has foul lines, while basketball has a free throw line. A former American President drew a line in the sand and warned Iraq’s Saddam Hussein it would mean war if he crossed it.

As an official there are lines that we don’t cross and the same is true for coaches and players. No matter the sport or game written in all the rulebooks are lines that should never be crossed. Sometime there are severe consequences if you violate the rules and cross certain lines.

Last Saturday a very big line was crossed and I haven’t heard a peep from any of the numerous so called “experts”. Behind late in their game against Boston College Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston pushed an official as the Seminoles were hurrying to run a play. It wasn’t an unintentional bump as we so often see but a physical shove. It was if he was trying to say to the official “you’re in my way and to shut up” because he didn’t belong on the field interfering with his attempt to run a play.

If you didn’t see the game or a replay of “The Shove” (as I’m calling it) it went something like this

As the officials were making sure both teams were ready for the next play the umpire was standing over the ball and giving verbal instructions to??? In his haste to get the ball snapped he reaches out and grabs the umpire by the arm and shoves him sideways and backwards.

We’ve seen players ejected, suspended and even banned from ever playing football again for their contact on a game official. But in this case nothing was said or done to correct Winston’s actions. The line he crossed on that play warrants a minimum suspension for the remainder of the season if not being thrown out of school. But just like the justice system in Florida the NCAA has turned a blind eye.

Once again the Sunshine State’s courts have seen fit to again postpone … … arraignment on rape charges. Since all the facts in his case are being withheld “upon further review” we won’t know what to make of the very serious accusations made by two female students. My train of thought on this issue is simple; get ALL the facts then present them for the possibility of criminal charges and do it in a timely fashion then move on.

This constant delaying action looks like the priorities in Tallahassee are getting to the first college playoff championship then we’ll prosecute AFTER all of eligibility has been exhausted. This case is looking more and more like the Cam Newton one in that the NCAA wouldn’t investigate the charges he was paid $180,000.00 to play for Auburn. When the dust settled in “Camgate” the NCAA said it didn’t have any authority to fine Auburn since the cash supposedly went to Cam’s father. And again the NCAA waited until Cam was drafted and playing in the NFL before announcing its findings.

But in this case there is no reason why the NCAA isn’t commenting or for that matter from any of the thousands of sports know it all’s. This latest incident proves to me that if any agent takes him as a client better get ready for many court appearances because he has no regard or respect for authority.

By placing his hands on an official and pushing that official out of the way tells a lot about the lack of respect … … has. He’s a ticking time bomb, a criminal in the making and one that will fit right in with the hordes of felons playing in the NFL. The lack of respect for today’s officials goes deep and it’s spreading from the professional ranks all the way down to Pee-Wee football.

It would be refreshing to see authority finally take a stand and suspend Winston from the rest of his playing days at Florida State. There is no room for error in this instance and way past time for the NCAA to get a pair and stand up to all athletes that do the wrong thing. But they’ll probably sit back and hope this blows over so they won’t have to bench someone that put butts in the stadiums!!!

Once again, money rules over doing the right thing!!

Till next week… …
