What is Paul Mainieri’s secret to winning in Hoover? The question was asked all weekend, and in my mind was never answered.
LSU’s record at the SEC under Mainieri is incredible, and the only explanation given was that LSU takes pride in winning the SEC Tournament. While that is great to hear, it is a ridiculous explanation. If that was all it took, then LSU should just take more pride in winning Super Regionals and College World Series games.
The real answer is probably a combination of reasons, but I want to explore one reason. Coach Mainieri knows the expectation at LSU is to win the CWS. He has adjusted LSU’s style of play to the new park in Omaha and the changes in the bats and balls. Coincidentally, that adjustment fits the stadium in Hoover as well.
Uncharacteristically, LSU did not play great defense in Hoover, but Zach Watson chased down every fly ball from gap to gap in the cavernous outfield. The Tiger hitters put the ball in play and use their speed to take extra bases and put pressure on the defense. As it turns out, LSU might play better in Hoover than Alex Box because the team is a better fit for a bigger ballpark.
Hopefully, LSU will be playing the next two weekends in Alex Box, though. I have to admit, despite LSU’s dominance last week, I can see the landmines that could keep this team from Omaha.
Here are three “unexepected” keys to success for this weekend.
The first key is LSU will need someone to step up in long relief. There is a likelihood of either rain delays or an unexpected bad starting performance this weekend. Therefore, LSU will most likely need someone to eat up innings earlier than normal. Todd Peterson would be the most likely candidate at this point. As I type, Mainieri hasn’t picked a starter for Friday, but I am expecting Caleb Gilbert due to his good start last week, his experience, and this option saves Poche for Sunday.
The second key is for two of the following players, Coomes, Jordan, Smith, or Pap to have a good weekend. LSU rode the hitting of The Big 4 + Watson to a championship last weekend. Baseball odds just don’t allow for all four to stay that hot another weekend. Meanwhile, the four listed above struggled in Hoover, especially Coomes. Hitting behind Deichmann, he will need to be better.
The third key is Coach Mainieri. He has been pulling all the right strings recently, but many have not been easy. If weather does play a factor, he will have to make many tough calls with the pitching staff. This staff has been tough to figure out at times. Certain pitchers have gone from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde in the matter of an inning. Fortunately, the starting pitchers have pitched into the 7th and 8th inning keeping many options open. Usually, the NCAA Tournament has a way of making everything more challenging, though.
HEY REF
And just when you think you’ll never hear or see him again, lo and behold former 49er QB Colin Kaepernick is given a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks. I am hoping he remains unemployed and never walks onto an NFL field unless it’s to cut the grass or sweep the turf. There has to be some interest or he wouldn’t have been given a chance to sit down with Seahawk management yesterday.
I’ve seen and heard that Seattle will not sign him to an offer that would have him under contract when the season begins. But who’s to say that he won’t be the first player to receive a call and be told to suit up if and when starter Russell Wilson goes down? Without going into his actions on the 49er sidelines during the 2016 season GM John Lynch recently confirmed the Niners were going to “CUT” Kaepernick at the end of last season if he hadn’t opted out of his contract. He was allowed to walk free after giving up $14.5 million in what’s called injury guarantees even though he played in eleven games in 2016.
San Francisco did try to work a deal with almost the entire NFL before last season ended hoping to get some value for their investment that went bust. There were no takers so to speak when the 49ers asked as a minimum that any team wanting to do a deal throw in a few late round picks in the draft. That didn’t add enough spice to get a bite form any of the other 31 franchises. So Lynch sat down with Kaepernick before free agency started to give him the bad news which then in turn allowed him a little face saving gesture when the team announced their has-been QB would go on the open market.
All I can say is it looks like some sanity still resides within the NFL structure. One big reason I feel that made “pulling the trigger” on Kaepernick much easier is the fact there are quarterbacks as good or better that he is at very discounted prices. And if you throw in the fact he refused to ride the bench in 2017 as a backup then you see how letting this huge headache go a whole lot easier to do. My only concern is that if there becomes a need for somebody as talented as he is to step in for an injured Drew Brees would the Saints take a gamble? If he’s not signed and on a roster to start the season somewhere in one of the other 31 cities I’d be surprised if at some time during next season some team does call him to run their offense.
And yes I do think that New Orleans will call him if there is a need since they continue refusing to draft and bring in a talented, top notch rookie. As a backup Kaepernick will only have to run 75% to 85% of the playbook and he is still good enough to pick up half of any team’s playbook in a couple weeks. So, it looks like there could be some high drama in the coming weeks as those teams that suffer an injury to their number one QB or a seasoned backup won’t hesitate to call him in the hopes of making it to the Super Bowl.
Don’t count him out or think you’ve seen the last of him. No sir, we know what the NFL is all about, right? Of course right! The only thing that matters in the NFL is playing and wining that last game, no matter the cost!!
Till next week…
