THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Mission accomplished. The LSU coaches can go to the top high school players after the Alabama game and make the argument that LSU is just a few playmakers away from beating Alabama again.
That has not been the case in recent years. I don’t care what the score was last year. Anyone that watched the game knew LSU was not going to score against the Alabama defense. There has been a hangover in the past after losing to Alabama because those players knew in their hearts that LSU was not capable of beating the Tide.
LSU now has film of a game against Alabama where receivers and running backs were in position to make plays. DJ Chark had opportunities behind Bama defenders. Etling had open receivers. LSU was balanced.
The young offensive line held their own against the vaunted Bama defense. The Tigers protected the quarterback and created seems for running backs. By the time Matt Canada stretched the Alabama defense horizontally, vertically and converted some third downs, LSU had control of the line of scrimmage. The fact that LSU didn’t finish those plays is even more reason for talented players to sign with LSU.
LSU’s recruits and Tiger fans wanted to see LSU use the entire field and get multiple players involved again Alabama. That happened.
I can’t believe I am going to be the one to say this, but it is too early to be thinking about the playoffs and Super Bowl for the Saints. The next four games will tell us how good the Saints can actually become this year.
The Saints did play their best game of the year against Tampa. The defense finally avoided the random 40 yard runs, and that makes a huge difference. The offense made enough plays and continued to run well.
But the Saints continue to lose the turnover battle, the offense is barely missing on explosive plays, and the special teams is a roller coaster.
Of course, all of that could be seen as a positive. I don’t know if the Eagles and Rams can improve, but the Saints surely can continue to get better. I am glad the Saints can win without Brees throwing for 330 yards, but sometime soon, he is going to have to throw for that many yards for the Saints to win a game. The quarterbacks for the best teams are too good for this defense to hold them to the numbers Saints opponents have thrown for during the streak.
The good news, though, and what has me excited is the trajectory for the Saints and Tigers. Both teams are certainly up and coming!
HEY REF
Sorry NFL but one is not enough! One as in the number of games Tampa Bay’s wide receiver Mike Evans is suspended because of the hit he delivered to the BACK of Saints’ rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore during last Sunday’s game in the Super Dome. We’ve all seen the cheapest of cheap shots and I for one am shocked Lattimore didn’t sustain a major injury as Evans just about laid out the rookie.
I’m one of those “old school” players/officials and judge a player on his actions and not his words. Evans can’t defend his actions no matter how long he continues to say his reason was “to protect my quarterback”. We all know that type of reasoning won’t fly on any field. The NFL missed a golden opportunity to, as many would say, “ROCK HIS WORLD”! With all the troubles and protests being done by today’s spoiled little rich kids this was the chance to show the rest of the world that the owners can and will discipline its players.
I know you want to ask me how I would’ve handled this situation and I won’t take much of your time in dishing out the correct punishment that I believe fits the crime. First thing I’d suspend Evans the rest of the season WITHOUT PAY. Then he’d part ways with a cool $100,000.00 dollars and have to attend anger management classes before he could apply to be reinstated. And last but not least he’d have zero chances to continue his playing days if he ever delivered another such hit.
Then I wouldn’t allow him the chance to challenge and/or appeal his termination upon another such instance. I know that player safety is the reason for many rule changes in high school and I’ve got to also think that the NCAA and the NFL also take the safety of its players as its top reason for many rule changes. If that isn’t the case then all I can say is player safety should be the first thing rules writing committees consider whenever considering a re-write of their rules.
Dirty play has no place in any level of play. I’ll admit I’ve never had a game in which I penalized every foul I saw. It is true we’ll let holding go if that hold happens away from the point of attack simply because there’s holding somewhere on each and every play. The number one thing we as officials are charged with isn’t to call all the penalties we “see”. Not by a long shot but we must always defend rule number one and that is never allow a team to gain an advantage by going outside the intent of the rule.
So many officials and too many in my world think that they can prove to the crew of game officials and coaches they really know the rules by the number of flags they throw. It’s just the opposite; good officiating takes years to master simply because we’ve usually got less than a half second to process the information about what we see and then does that action warrant a penalty. Many coaches back in my day would beg for us to not call holding all night and just penalize the big ones, personal fouls.
It’s a very thin line we walk many times during a game that we ask ourselves does that action (a) Break the rules or (b) Break the intent of the rule. Good officials are usually split when answering that question and only the great officials’ work ethic is that the only time to throw your rag is if the intent of the rule is broken. And I have to agree with the way I was taught that the only reason to penalize is if a team is in fact trying to gain an advantage by going outside the INTENT.
If a crew ever tried to penalize every foul they saw then they’d still be on the field instead getting ready for church. The way coaches think the game should be called is not the way officials think and I’ll give you an excellent example; one year during an official’s camp a question was asked of them which foul makes them see “red”. One of the three coaches said (offensive) holding got under his skin; he knows it happens on every play. He asked us to “NOT” call holding since he teaches his players to hold.
That coach’s rational was sooner or later the crew of officials will get tired of calling it which then opens the door for his players to continue to hold without worrying about getting penalized. It’s this type of thinking that causes the crew to look bad when they finally resume calling a holding foul. That is why I was taught to only call the foul if a team gained an advantage by their action.
I had one of these types of coaches early in my career. He constantly begged for me to call holding all thru the first half. We started the 3rd quarter and with just a couple minutes gone he starts going crazy about a holding call I made right in front of him. He screamed that I didn’t call it during the first half and now I’m starting to call it and he couldn’t figure “WHY” and I told him it was because the hold was right at the P. O. A.
Well, he didn’t like it and I let him vent since one of us had to stay civilized. Then on his first defensive play his guy is held right in front of us but the ball went the other way. He started again on the holding called on him but not the other team. Then he crossed the line, continued yelling on and on so I just turned around and told him “Hey coach, give me a break, I’m out here to call balls and strikes”! He stopped dead in his tracks and was telling his other coaches what I just said. I saw his mouth wide open as he processed my reply.
It was after a few more seconds that it hit him. He just had a sly grin on his face as he came up to me during a time out and asked me “Can you tighten up your strike zone”? That’s the type of thing fans don’t get a chance to hear and it’s a way that we communicate with coaches, sometimes.
Till next week…
