THE STORY MARCHES ON
Through thick and thin, a very (euphemistically speaking) unorthodox station to work for, a few knuckleheads in the city, The Central Story returns for the third calendar year
We thank our terrific sponsors for making this possible. The Central Sports & Business Report on The Central Story airs tonight, 5:30pm—6:30pm, broadcasting live from Me Pa’s Diner in Central, on WPFC, 1550AM, Baton Rouge and on the Internet at JonFineProductions.com. Host Steve Johnson will be joined by Central Football players Ben Averrette, Jace Bragg, Blaze Courville and Tyler Sansone.
Monday night, it is Destined to Win on The Central Story with Pastor Rocky Bezet of The Rock Church (same Bat time, same Bat channel, same Bat internet).

If July is the end of the sports year, then January marks the midway point. So let's check in with the local teams and evaluate the year to date.
In Baton Rouge, it starts with LSU football. At the time I am typing this, I think most LSU fans are undecided on whether this has been a successful year. The next two days will decide the success of the season to most fans.
A bowl win and the commitments from the best recruiting prospects in Louisiana in years will make it a great year in the hearts and minds of Tiger fans. A bowl win, but the loss of "must-have" in state prospects and I think most Tiger fans will be disappointed. A bowl loss, but the commitments of the "must-haves" and Tiger fans will be optimistic about the future. If the Tigers lose the bowl and the prospects then the sky will literally be falling. I am going to cop out on making any predictions since the games and the commitments will be made by the time this article is read (I know that is lame of me).
As for the Saints, I think this season has to be considered a success regardless of the results in the playoffs. Most locals thought the Saints would win 10 games. Most national media had the Saints winning 9 games. They won 11 games with a very difficult schedule.
The defense has been fixed and should only get younger and better next year. The offense has not been at its best late in games or in scoring points, but it has still been good. Knowing Loomis and Payton like we do, you can take the following predictions to the bank. The Saints will sign Graham. They will find a deep threat at receiver. Armstead will continue to mature and will be a great offensive lineman. New offensive lineman will be brought in, and Mark Ingram will be playing for another NFL team next year.
I don't like the Saints chances against the Eagles for many reasons, and none are weather or road related. I think the loss of Vaccaro and Greer on defense will be exposed against the Eagles offense. Offensively, we saw explosive plays against the Bucs, but those plays had moe to do with the Bucs than the Saints. Usually, the Saints explosive plays come off their running game. They did not come in that manner against the Bucs and the Eagles have a stout run defense. The Saints must run the ball effectively against the Eagles to keep the defense off the field and set up big pass plays.
I have written many times this year about my excitement for the basketball season. So far, the Pelicans have been just a tad disappointing. Under close examination though, there is still reason for optimism.
The Pelicans are hovering around.500 despite losing Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson for portions of the season. The guards are the strength of the team and have had a tough time finding chemistry, though that seems to be working itself out. The biggest problem recently has been execution at the end of games. This is a young team with new parts. If they can gain some leadership and experience in those situations, the Pelicans could be a team that gets hot in the second half of the season.
LSU basketball has lived up to expectations so far. In the ideal world, the Tigers would have pulled out the Memphis and UMass games at the end. Considering the time of year, it is not surprising that those games turned into losses. Those results do not change the fact that the Tigers are talented, fun to watch, and one of the five best teams in the SEC. They should make the NCAA Tournament, and their seed will be determined by their maturity in finishing close games.
Thankfully, this sports year would have to be considered average so far. Growing up, this football season would be considered outstanding, but the bar has been raised for LSU and the Saints. Both the Tigers and the Saints have the opportunity in the next week or so to make the 2014 side of the sports year special and a Happy New Year.
