THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Another Super Bowl has come and gone, and I have some thoughts to share:

The 49ers had played in 5 Super Bowls without throwing an interception? That is an amazing stat.

Vernon Davis is an incredible tight end. Michael Crabtree has turned into a #1 receiver. I think the Niners were one more quality receiver away from winning the game. Consequently, I find it humorous to think the self proclaimed “greatest receiver of all time” wasn't good enough as a #2 receiver to pick up the slack.

The Ravens reinforced my concept for new measurements to determine effective NFL defenses that I proposed in October. Yards surrendered are mostly irrelevant. Turnovers and red zone defense are the keys to effective defense in modern football.

San Francisco needs to get over the no call in the end zone at the end. I do not like the fourth down fade call with a mobile quarterback because it is such an all or nothing call. In the entire series of downs, the 49ers didn't use the unique skill sets of Kaepernick, Davis, and Crabtree to put the Raven defense in a bind.

Not that it mattered, but it is inexcusable for the officials not to call holding on the Ravens at the end when they are holding intentionally. There is a fine line between letting the players decide the game and relinquishing control of the game.

Call me petty. Call me vengeful. But if the NFL upper brass was at all distraught during the blackout, then I call the Super Bowl in New Orleans a success. Seriously, it is a shame it happened, but spending two seconds wondering if that will impact future sporting events coming to New Orleans is two seconds too long. When the Super Bowl was in the new Cowboy Stadium the bleachers were not completed, and the NFL had the horrible scenario of having to find seats for those people. I have not heard anyone talking about the NFL staying away from Jerry’s World.

How about the impact of the New Orleans born players Jacoby Jones and Ed Reed? I would like to see someone do research on Super Bowls and find another Super Bowl where the homegrown players made a bigger impact.

I feel for John Harbaugh. He reached the pinnacle of his profession and does not get to enjoy it with his family the way he should. From now on, I will be rooting for two teams to win the Super Bowl. Obviously, the Saints are first priority. But, if they can’t win it, then I will root for whichever team is coached by John Harbaugh.

HEY REF

Well, I must say that this past Super Bowl has finally replaced my favorite game of all time. If you read my column last week I wrote that I haven’t seen a more intense or entertaining game since Louisiana’s own Terry Bradshaw took the trophy in game number 13 against the defending champion Dallas Cowboys.

There’s already been way too opinions as to why this writer or that writer feels this was the best game so I’ll just keep “why” to myself. I mean it’s not hard to figure out if you watched the game or have any hint of professional football. And if I may blow my own horn, which I seldom do, I hit this game right on the head in that the Ravens with their “Ray-Ray” factor would take it in the end. All I can say is please don’t forget how Lewis “celebrated” after another game, by slashing someone with a knife, so I can have ZERO RESPECT FOR HIM OR ANY FAN THAT DOES!!! In my book, once a killer; always a killer…

What I’d really like to draw attention to is what some people found amusing, plastering NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s face all over the French Quarter and saying “Don’t serve this man”! My, oh my, in my hometown the place is overcrowded with hypocrites. Didn’t we here in the South just vote for the Republican candidate, once again, the party of Law and Order? Don’t we all stand for law and order? Don’t we believe in punishing those guilty of committing a crime/s? Aren’t we tired of those guilty parties getting away with breaking the law?

I see it every day here in Louisiana. We live it every day. Justice must reign supreme. Those that do wrong must be punished and only the stiffest penalties should be doled out! Yes, I can hear the masses screaming “Off with their heads”. But wait, that only applies to other people not our New Orleans Saints players. If ever the job of commissioner was at its toughest, it was these last two years.

I don’t agree with a lot that this commissioner has done but when faced with the gravest actions that any player or players can commit against another player, he had to act. The ONLY thing that he could do was come down harder than he’s ever had to when dealing with the players conduct on the field. The so-called Bounty Gate was handled the way we’d want it handled if another team ran a system where they, coaches and players, put money up to INTENTIONALLY inflict game ending injuries to any Saints players.

The proof is there, defensive coach Greg Williams ran this horrible, inexcusable scheme where players were paid very small sums of money, when you look at today’s salaries, to injure players so badly that they had to be removed from the game. There was no stipulation that the injury was only for a play, quarter, game, NO!! It didn’t matter if you ended the other guy’s career. Taking away his livelihood, his ability to make a living and support his family after football, NO! It was a system of indifference and cruelty of the highest matter. In my opinion the franchise should’ve had to forfeit its lone Super Bowl Title!

How can I write or even believe that the Saints should have been forced to hand back the Lombardi Trophy? Let me answer that with this “If Drew Brees had been hit three years ago and that hit ended his playing days how many Saints fans would want to hang the team, players and coaches responsible”? That’s an easy one to answer, EVERY NEW ORLEANS SAINTS FAN would want the commissioner to ban all involved for life. No penalty would be too severe for those responsible for ending the star quarterback’s playing days in the Big Easy.

So, I say it was in the utmost of bad taste to do what some establishments did. They embarrassed the city I feel. We were the HOST CITY and that comes with what’s known as responsibility to ensure all fans even a commissioner that’s not liked, to be safe and enjoy our hospitality! In Louisiana we believe in God, doing the right thing, helping our neighbors and a stiff, just punishment for those that go outside the lines.

We as a nation are fighting a new evil known as gangs and some kind of newfangled gangsters at every level and at every turn in our society. Keeping our kids safe in schools away from these individuals is a never ending ordeal. Too many young black men are being slaughtered in the streets of every city in every state. I fear gangs are now involved in the NFL game and this commissioner acted correctly in his decisions to suspend, fine and ban at least one coach.

The player that was heard on tape by NFL Films, no name needed, said and I quote when Brett Favre went down in the Championship Game three years ago “I did it, NOW PAY ME MY MONEY”! Head Coach Sean Payton’s utter silence the past twelve months shows he’s guilty and served his sentence like a man. Now, if only the city and its fans would follow his lead we might be able to put to rest this dark chapter in all of professional sports.

I’ll end this week’s discussion by asking mom and pop this; “if your son is hit and intentionally injured for life by another player, on the field, will you ask me as an official to penalize the player responsible”? Or will you post my face in your restaurant and tell people not to serve me because I did nothing????

Till next week… …
