Our condolences go out to the friends, family and loved ones of former LSU Basketball great and Athletic Director Joe Dean, who passed away earlier this week
I (Jon Fine) thought that what quite often gets lost in the LSU Tigers athletic success of today is the great job Joe Dean did, in a certain sense paving the way, coming in as Athletic Director at LSU in the mid-80s and stabilizing a department that, at the very least spending-wise, was spiraling out of control
Also, and I’m as guilty as anyone—shame on me… before there was Pete Maravich and Dale Brown and Rudy M and Shaq and Tasmin (little home-cooking Denham Springs plug!), there were some great players and teams at LSU. Bob Petit, Frank Brian and Joe Dean were giants in their day. Because it happened so long ago, the performances of the stars of yesteryear are often overlooked by the media.—Guilty as charged as a former long-time sports-talk show host in Louisiana
Finally, Joe Dean was a very nice person in his dealings with me. He’d always accommodate my interview requests. He’d always return my phone calls. He’d always say hello with a smile and a pat on the back. He was just a real good guy… and a character!
Although no one has ever attributed it to us, we broke the story that Chris Jackson was coming to LSU. It was something that Joe Dean told me during a visit to Lake Charles (when I hosted a show there)
I wish I could have told him all of this when he was alive. So, posthumously, I tell the world about what an A #1 guy that Joe Dean was. They don’t make too many like Joe Dean anymore!

“I feel like I have been transported to the late 80s early 90s as I watch this game.” That was the text I sent to a friend as I watched the Saints play the Niners from inside the Superdome on Sunday.
The Saints were finding a way to lose despite controlling the game. Promising drives stalled inside the red zone and led to field goals (I kept looking for Morten Anderson). The defense was in total control, yet the Niner offense was able to score just enough. With the Saints trailing 20-14 my friend responded, “You just may be right.”
Of course this is a different era of Saints football, and the Saints started to come back. They were the team on the comeback trail and the Niners couldn’t put the game away. When Brees was hit by Ahmad Brooks and fumbled, the friend I was with and the people around me immediately expected a flag. We could see the illegal clothesline from Section 606.
Days after the game, I am still dumbfounded as to the “controversy” surrounding the call made on the field. We are in week 11 of the NFL season. This rule has been enforced consistently all year. In live action and in replay, Brooks CLEARLY committed a penalty. The penalty was called immediately and enforced appropriately.
To those who argue the hit was not malicious, since when has intent mattered in personal fouls? The rule can only be enforced on where and when the defender hits the quarterback, not if he did it to be mean or dirty.
To Ray Lewis, get your facts straight. Drew Brees said he knew the hit was a penalty based on where he was hit, not how hard. You own Brees an apology for challenging his toughness. In addition, you owe Brees neither apology for defending Brooks because Brees is not a tall quarterback. For Lewis to imply that the rules should not be enforced on Brees because he is not a tall quarterback is insulting and moronic. Lewis wants defenders treating fairly as men, but is not willing to show the same consideration to Brees.
To Mike Ditka, your comments remind me to thank you for no longer being the head coach of the New Orleans Saints and embarrassing our city with your antics.
To the NFL, a player should be allowed to commit a penalty without getting fined.
Back to the game, The Saints of the Payton era have learned to win many more games like this past Sunday than they lose, and it is such a joy to see. The Sean Payton led saints handle adversity as well as anyone in the league.
Yet, the Niners are stuck on the call and that is maybe the explanation as to why they are 6-4 this year. Last year, everything went their way and it was smooth sailing. This year, they have encountered some actual adversity. They are the hunted now and they aren’t handling it well. They have not adjusted offensively to how the coaches are scheming to stop their offense.
Apparently, the coaches and players aren’t well versed in the rules either. Harbaugh and Brooks don’t understand where the head and neck are on a quarterback in the pocket. Harbaugh still thinks the hit was legal and that doesn’t bode well for them because that penalty will be called 100 out of 100 times. In the middle of the season, Harbaugh should focus on knowing and following the rules, not changing the rules. leave that to the former players in the media.
Furthermore, Mario Manningham doesn’t know that a receiver has to control the catch through the action when he goes to the ground. As a result, he and the entire offense forced Harbaugh to use his last challenge in the first half on a play they had zero chance of having overturned. Instead of lining up to run the next play, the offense stood around demanding a challenge.
The Niners are apparently lacking the leadership to realize they need to worry about what they can control. They can control if Frank Gore catches the ball wide open at the end of the game. They can control if the quarterback, leader of the offense, runs out of bounds allowing the Saints to save their last timeout.
The Niners had plenty of opportunities to win the game on the field despite any call that was made. But they did not win. The Saints did. The Saints beat the Forty-Niners in the Dome in a game that I attended. Who Dat!

Well the first week of the 2013 high school football playoffs is in the books. And if you’ve been paying close attention you know I’m a supporter of the expanded system adopted by the majority of school principals. With just one week under our belts it’s way too early to form any kind of opinion whether it’ll be a good thing or not for all involved.
On the plus side more schools are involved and able to extend their seasons if only for just a week or maybe two. The “down” side if you want to call it that is the competition is watered-down as some schools that have compiled winless seasons are getting the reward of competing for a state title. In my world any team that doesn’t have at minimum a break even season should be at home after the final regular season game is in the books.
It almost resembles the NHL hockey playoffs where nearly 80% of teams play for the Stanley Cup no matter what kind of record/season they’ve had. To me that’s a huge drawback to this new format and not too sure it’s what the principals had in mind and were trying to achieve when it was decided to split the playoff brackets into “select” (private schools) and “non-select” (public ones).
For instance one division holds ten schools. The bracket as it’s presently drawn allows six a huge benefit of a first round bye. Four unlucky teams have to play the first week without time to heal or rest their starters. One option I propose that should be explored is to (a) expand that division to 16 teams with everybody playing the same number of games or (b) reduce the number to 8 teams with all getting the reward of a first week bye and that of course means all teams will then play the same number of games. Trying to make this new playoff system fair to all by adopting either scenario I feel is a no-brainer since in the end all the teams in that division will play the same number of games.
One big negative I see is schools playing each other in the regular season are put against each other that first week. Do whatever is needed to keep this from happening. Playoffs used to be a reward for having a successful season and I just find no reward if I’ve got to turn around and play a district foe again that first week. I won’t sit here and nit-pick the new brackets. I’ll wait till everything is settled and see where improvements can be made before making any final decision on if the schools did the right thing by going to the new nine classification playoff.
It’ll be very interesting to see what changes the principals make for next year. There will be changes made to the playoff brackets next year that goes without saying. I’d just like to take my hat off to the principals for attempting to make the whole experience for the schools and players their top motivation for expanding the system. After all, shouldn’t that be the ONLY reason for all this?
Till next week…
